Last night (February 2), all eyes in the film world turned to London for BAFTA’s 2020 EE British Academy Film Awards. With only a week to go until the Oscars light up Hollywood, did the results from last night’s ceremony shore up support for the favourites of this award season?
In a word… yes. The big four acting categories were had a clean sweep of Joaquin Phoenix, Renée Zellweger, Laura Dern and Brad Pitt. If you’re planning on having an Oscars sweeps next week – try and wrangle that foursome.
The big winner of the night was the British World War I drama 1917. The film from director Sam Mendes took home seven trophies including Best Film, Outstanding British Film and Best Director. It is doubtful it will have similar success next week, but you never know. Other big winners were Joker with three wins and Parasite with two. Despite earning 10 nominations, The Irishman walked away empty handed, meanwhile Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (also with 10 noms) only picked up the one for Pitt.
