Little Shop of Horrors is a truly great and fun musical. Based off the 1960 B-movie of the same name, the musical follows neurotic and nebbish Seymour who grows an alien plant with a taste for human flesh. As the plant’s popularity and Seymour’s grows so does the plant’s hunger. Yikes.
The horror-comedy is a staple for any musical theatre kid and a favorite Off-Broadway production. In fact, 2019 saw not one but two revivals of Little Shop of Horrors. One starring Jonathan Groff as Seymour and Tammy Blanchard as Audrey on Off-Broadway and the other starring George Salazar (Be More Chill) and Pose‘s MJ Rodriguez as Seymour and Audrey at the Pasedena Playhouse.
The Off-Broadway production will release its cast recording through Ghostlight Records on Friday, Dec. 20 providing a palette cleanser from all the Christmas music. The production also includes Christian Borle as the Dentist and Kingsley Leggs as the Voice of Audrey II.
In preparation for the record drop, you can listen to the 2019 Off-Broadway cast cover “Skid Row (Downtown)” over at Entertainment Weekly. Unsurprisingly, given his golden pipes, Groff is absolutely amazing as Seymour and Blanchard definitely has Audrey down pat. Also slaying the game are Ari Groover, Salome Smith, and Joy Woods as the Urchins.
Little Shop of Horrors will be available for purchase or streaming on Friday.
