Happy Tony Awards day, everyone! It’s bound to be a big day for Lin Manuel Miranda’s incredibly successful musical Hamilton - which set a record for most Tony nominations. One of its many nominees is Broadway newbie Phillipa Soo. Soo plays Hamilton’s wife, Eliza, the show’s leading lady.
As we already know, Miranda will be making his exit from the show in just under a month, on July 9. Now, The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Soo will be leaving at the same time. Next month is when most of the original cast members’ contracts end, so this very well could just be the tip of the iceberg.
It’s been an eventful year for Soo, and not just on the Broadway stage. Earlier this year she became engaged to fellow Broadway star Steven Pasquale. The two met through Soo’s Hamilton co-star Jonathan Groff.
So, what’s next for Soo? Well, her first stop is another collaboration with Miranda. She’ll be lending her voice to Disney’s upcoming film Moana, the music of which is being composed by Miranda. After that, nothing is for sure, although rumor has it she’ll be pursuing a career in film and television. Soo did, after all, have a role in the short-lived but well-loved series Smash.
What she won’t be doing, however, is returning to Broadway to star in Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet. Soo originated the role of Natasha when the show debuted off broadway, and it will be making its way to Broadway very soon. As a matter of fact, Soo was discovered by Miranda and Hamilton director Thomas Kail after he saw her stunning performance in the play.
No matter what she decides to do next, I think it’s fair to say Phillipa Soo’s star will continue to burn bright.
