In the wake of the season finale of Snowpiercer, which ended with a major twist about the whereabouts of Alexandra Cavill, the daughter of the show’s female lead Melanie, it was announced that Sean Bean would appear in season 2. Although Bean is notorious for playing characters who always seem to get killed off, from Ned Stark in Game of Thrones to Alec Trevelyan in Golden Eye, it was announced that in season 2 he will play a character who was assumed to be dead, but is actually alive.
In the teaser for the second season, Bean is shown to be playing Mr Wilford, the head of the train who was deposed off-screen by Melanie Cavill (Jennifer Connelly), before the beginning of the show. Throughout most of season 1, the passengers on Snowpiercer assume that the disembodied voice of Mr Wilford signifies his benevolent watch over their ever-moving post-apocalyptic home. It is soon revealed to viewers that Cavill has deposed him, duping everyone, Wizard of Oz-style, into thinking he is still in power by having one of the train drivers give the announcements in the guise of Wilford. Chaos ensues when Andre Layton (Daveed Diggs), a former homicide detective and de facto leader of ‘the Tail,’ the train’s underclass section, discovers her secret, and pays dearly for it.
At the end of season 1 of Snowpiercer, the train Mr Wilford used to cheat death, known as Big Alice, is shown to catch up with Snowpiercer, forcing the two trains to be linked. Instead of boarding, Mr Wilford sends Alexandra Cavill (Rowan Blanchard) ahead to demand surrender from the inhabitants of the train he founded.
Little is known about how Bean’s role will develop from here, but it is likely to be significant, given the key role played by Wilford so far, in his absence as well as his presence.
