Glee star Naya Rivera went missing last night (Wednesday, July 8) while on a boat ride with her young son.
The news broke on Wednesday night that Rivera, age 33, disappeared while with her young son, Josey Dorsey. Dorsey was found unharmed and sleeping in the pontoon boat that he had rented with his mother earlier in the day. Rivera and her son rented the boat to go swimming at Lake Piru in Ventura County, Calif, but when they didn’t return the boat on time, staff went looking for the pair.
The Ventura County Sheriff’s office started a search on Wednesday, but called it off for the night to continue on Thursday morning, according to the Twitter account for the department.
The search for Naya Rivera will continue this morning at Lake Piru. The lake will be closed to the public while search operations continue. Dive teams from throughout the region will be assisting us through mutual aid. @VCAirUnit @Cal_OES @fillmoresheriff pic.twitter.com/q6LsHd8xaT

Talking with the Los Angeles Times, Ventura County Sheriff’s Dept. Capt. Eric Buschow said, “The family is going through a very traumatic time right now.”
He added that the current theory at the time of publication was the Rivera drowned, “We’re going on the belief that she did go in the water and we have not been able to locate her. So this may well be a case of drowning.”
In a press conference, it was shared that Dorsey saw his mother go under the water and not emerge.
Talking with The Washington Post, VCSD officer Chris Deyer said that there were “no signs of foul play, no signs of anything that went wrong besides a tragic accident.”
He added, “Switching that mode to a search-and-recovery mode, like I said, does not change the efforts and does not change the gusto, what we push forward with the search operation. The goal is still to bring Ms. Rivera home to her family, so they can have some closure.”
Rivera’s former Glee co-stars have taken to social media to share their shock, horror, and prayers.
Praying.
