Ozark And The Crown Lead 26th Critics Choice Award TV Nominations

By this time in January, we are usually well in the midst of award season. The Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards have come and gone. The Screen Actors Guild Awards would be any day and speculation would be rife for the BAFTAs, Spirit Awards and Oscars. However, as with so many things over the past year, COVID has altered this beloved period for film and TV fans. With red carpets a thing of the past and ceremonies postponed and vastly different from the pomp and glamour we’re used to, yesterday’s announcement of the TV nominees for the 26th Critics Choice Awards was a welcome relief.

Leading the pack were Netflix dramas Ozark and The Crown with six nominations each. As well as Best Drama, Ozark’s Jason Bateman is up against The Crown’s Josh O’Connor for Best Actor in a Drama Series. In the Best Actress in a Drama Series category, the Queen herself Olivia Colman as well as Emma Corrin will battle Ozark’s Laura Linney. Both series will also go head to head in the supporting acting categories with Tom Pelphery, Julia Garner and Janet McTeer nominated for Ozark and Tobias Menzies and Gillian Anderson for The Crown.

Not far behind with five nominations a piece is Lovecraft Country (HBO), Mrs. America (FX), Schitt’s Creek (Pop), and What We Do in the Shadows (FX). For Schitt’s Creek’s final season, as well as Best Comedy Series, all four stars – Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Daniel Levy and Annie Murphy – were nominated in each of their respective acting categories. Could they pull off a clean sweep like they did at last year’s Emmys? Fingers crossed.

Better Call Saul (AMC) and The Plot Against America (HBO) also received four nods each.

During the nomination announcement, it was also revealed that Taye Diggs will host the March 7 live ceremony. The nominees in the Film categories will be announced on February 7 in addition to the format of this year’s ceremony.

The 26th Critics Choice Awards will air on the CW on Sunday March 7 from 7-9pm ET/PT.
