From aliens to spies to…musicals?
It looks like Lashana Lynch will be trading actions movies for musicals with this bit of casting news. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lynch has entered the final negotiations to join the cast of Matilda, the musical version, over on Netflix. Lynch will play everyone’s favorite teacher, Miss Honey.
Based on the classic Roald Dahnl novel about a precociously intelligent little girl who develops telekinesis, Matilda the musical originated in the West End in 2011 before heading over to Broadway in 2013. It was nominated and won a bunch of awards, including Olivier and Tony respectively. While the Danny DeVito directed 1996 film starring Mara Wilson at the title character remains true in our hearts, seeing the musical version updated will be fun.
There are a lot of bops in that musical.
Director of the stage musical, Matthew Warchus will direct the Netflix film with original playwright Dennis Kelly adapting the screenplay and Tim Minchin providing music and lyrics for original songs used.
There’s no release date for the project at this time.
