This Is Us Season 5 Teaser Offers Glimpses Of A “New Chapter” For The Pearsons

The fall TV season may have been yet another delayed because of the COVID pandemic, but slowly some of our old friends are returning to our screens. In just under two weeks, we will be reunited with the Pearsons once again with the two-hour season 5 premiere of This Is Us.

How different the world now looks since we were last with the Big 3?! As previously announced by creator Dan Fogelman on Twitter, season 5 will address COVID, stating they had “decided to attack things head on”. This was evident in the first trailer for the drama’s fifth season released yesterday (14 October).

While the 30-second promo didn’t feature a tonne of new footage (they did only restart filming a few weeks ago), they did present us with a number of flashes that teased and tantalised, and with Rebecca’s (Mandy Moore) comment to a teenage Kate (Hannah Zeile) that “I think it’s time we start a new chapter”, there’s plenty of ways this season could unfold. And if 2020 has taught us anything, expect the unexpected and never plan for anything.

The rift between Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and Kevin (Justin Hartley) looks like it will feature heavily in the first few episodes. We see Randall celebrating the big 4-0 alone with Beth and the girls, and not with Kate (Chrissy Metz), Kevin and their Mum at the cabin – as previously seen in last year’s flash-forward. However, given how the teaser ends, we might get some of this. We have Kevin with a pregnant Madison (Caitlin Thompson) and jubilant shots of Kate and Toby (Chris Sullivan). And of course we get that COVID reference – footage of Kevin walking to his car wearing a face mask.

Check out the trailer below:

The two-hour season 5 premiere of This Is Us airs 27 October at 9pm on NBC.
