Things are about to change in West Covina, and dramatically so. If you thought the final season of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend would come without some twists and turns, well, you thought wrong.
The critically acclaimed CW show about a woman’s move across the country for her childhood sweetheart is going into its fourth season by bringing back a central character from the first two seasons. Greg Serrano will return for the final few episodes of the series, but not the one you’d expect.
Santino Fontana will not reprise his role as Greg, but Pitch Perfect’s Skylar Astin will take on the role in what the creators of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend call a “reimagining”. At the Television Critics Association summer press tour in Los Angeles Rachel Bloom and Aline Brosh McKenna announced the latest addition to the cast.
“Rachel and I had always been exploring bring back that character,” so McKenna, and she stresses that it’s not a recasting, but that Greg functions as a reminder that people’s perceptions change. “We kind of play with perceptional issues of what somebody seems like when they come back.”
Greg had been a romantic interest for Rachel Bloom’s Rebecca Bunch from the start, a distraction from her seemingly hopeless crush on Josh. After several ups and downs Rebecca and Greg broke up, and Santino Fontana exited the series in season two as Greg left West Covina to pursue a Business degree at Emory University on the other side of the country.
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend has never been a TV-series that takes itself to serious, but putting a new face to a beloved character is always a tricky situation. While they have figured out an easily understandable way to explain his change in appearance away, the question remains of whether it is necessary. It doesn’t seem fair to put Astin in the hard-to-follow footsteps of Fontana, who turned Greg into a character we miss with every new episode.
The saddest aspect of the casting announcement is that it confirms that Fontana won’t be around for the final curtain call. And iff that isn’t heartbreaking enough, let’s relive some of our favourite Greg moments below:
