As we edge closer to the Big Top opening in Jupiter, Florida as Jessica Lange’s Freak Show rolls into town on October 8th, we can finally learn a little more about the characters we will grow to know, love, hate, and be petrified by.

Entertainment Weekly has found out all about the stars of the show, and can I just say I think we are in for quite the ride when American Horror Story: Freak Show returns next month.

Let’s start at the top with the German ex-cabaret star Elsa Mars, played by the amazingly talented Jessica Lange. Mars is in charge of the Freak Show, and as we have come to expect from Lange’s characters through the seasons of American Horror Story, Mars is a complex individual.  Talking about Mars, Lange said “My character is very manipulative,” says Lange. “She understands what’s needed and she provides it. However the thing I want to be very clear that Elsa really loves these people. She truly cares for them in her own selfish narcissistic way. It’s not just exploitation.”

Next up we have the conjoined twins, Dot and Bette who are played by Sarah Paulson.  Mars finds Dot and Bette and hopes the inclusion of the pair will draw the audiences back to her Freak Show.  Paulson says that Dot and Bette are definitely two individual, varying characters who share the one body, however she is quick to point out it is not necessarily a simple split: “It’s not as simple as nice and evil, it’s more complicated, in true Ryan Murphy style.”

Kathy Bates, plays Ethel the bearded lady who is Elsa Mars right hand woman. According to Ryan Murphy, she is someone who has a definite history. He said: “She helps run the camp, and she’s sort of the guardian of the law. She had a real tragedy in that she was a real circus star in the ‘20s and 30s and then she had her baby and she became a down-and-out drunk, and Elsa saved her.”  Also joining Ethel in the Freak Show is her son Jimmy, played by Evan Peters, who was born with lobster claw-like hands.

Adding more fun to the fair is AHS newcomer Michael Chiklis, who plays the strongman called Dell Toledo. Toledo is currently on the run from the law. He also brings with him his wife Desiree Dupree, played by Angela Bassett, who has three breasts!  According to Sarah Paulson, Bassett became very fond of the prosthetic chest piece she wore; “Angela likes to flash them. She’s like, ‘Look at my 3 boobs!’ ” I have to say that if I had three boobs, I might be tempted to do the same! There is just one slight complication to the arrival of the strongman and his unique wife, Dell Toledo is also the ex husband of Ethel, and is Jimmy’s father.

According to Murphy there will be a power struggle between Jimmy and his father; “Jimmy is the big man on campus and is the male leader of the group until Dell comes and they begin to battle for power under Elsa.”

We will also meet Denis O’Hare and Emma Roberts duo of con artists. We also welcome the return of Francis Conroy as a well to do woman whose son wants to run away and join the Freak Show.  Gabourey Sidibe will also be returning to the AHS fold as a wealthy socialite who returns to Jupiter after her mother disappears.

As we have come to expect from AHS  we will learn more about all our characters as the season progresses. So expect to see flashbacks of Elsa’s past as a cabaret star, and meet a younger Ethel.

Now on to the REALLY scary bit, let’s learn a little more about Twisty the Clown Killer. For my friends of a nervous disposition, you all know who you are, look away now.

John Carroll Lynch is the man behind the scary and villainous murderer.  Twisty has apparently chosen Jupiter as his home following his retirement and he is less than amused by the Freak Show coming to town.

According to Ryan Murphy, he is a villain akin to something we haven’t seen on AHS for a while; “He’s out to make their lives a living hell. He’s wearing a mask on the lower part of his face and there comes a point in the season where takes the mask off and when you see what’s under you will faint in terror.”

Twisty the Clown Killer is not the only scary one we will meet this season.  In the two part Halloween episode, we will meet a man straight from the horror myths and legends.  Hunger Games star Wes Bentley will be playing the two faced man Edward Mordrake.  Murphy says of the mythic man; “He is a very famous horror myth, it was a man with two faces. A normal face and then a face on the back of his head that would whisper evil things and force the forward-facing entity to commit horrible crimes.”

Oh wonderful! Can’t wait for that one.

I have noticed that we haven’t been given any details of the apparently twisted character that White Collar star Matt Bomer will play, but some surprises are worth the wait.

I am so, so excited for this upcoming season of American Horror Story and I will definitely need my Kermit cushion on stand by to hide behind, and I can’t wait!!

American Horror Story: Freak Show will open on October 8 at 10/9C on FX
