We are racing through Season 8 of Doctor Who with people still getting used to Peter Capaldi’s Time Lord, and now we have our first news on the Christmas episode, which started filming this week.

The rumour mill is already running at high speed, debating whether or not Jenna Coleman will be leaving the show during the episode, and only time will tell if these rumours are true.  Personally, I would not be overly disappointed if the upcoming festive episode means waving goodbye to The Impossible Girl, as I feel that Capaldi’s Doctor would benefit from a different companion.

We have our first confirmed news for the Christmas Special, and it has got my Whovians feels all a quiver.  Earlier today, the BBC released a photo of chairs with the names of three of the guest stars for the episode, and BOY are they good!

I was so excited when I saw the name Michael Troughton, and I can only imagine how excited he was at the realisation he will be following in the family footsteps in starring in an episode of Doctor Who. Troughton is of course the son of actor Patrick Troughton, best known for his portrayal as the Second Doctor in the 1960’s. This role marks a return to acting for Troughton who retired from acting for over a decade to look after his wife, and what a return it is.  The casting of Troughton means that he is the third Troughton to have appeared in the show.  David Troughton, his brother, appeared in the David Tennant episode “Midnight” and I can’t help but feel that Patrick Troughton would have loved the fact that both his sons have starred in a show that he was so proud to be a part of.

The news that Nick Frost will be in Doctor Who is also welcomed.  Frost is best known for his roles in the Edgar Wright movies Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead, and The World’s End which are best known as “The Cornetto Trilogy”. He  is one of my favourite comedians, and his chemistry with comedy partner and fellow Doctor Who alumnus Simon Pegg is something that needs to be seen regularly.  Even though he is a comedic actor, I would really like to see him show a more serious side in the episode, however I would imagine that Frost will be the comic relief much like Bill Bailey was when he starred in the 2011 Christmas Special. This is news that I have been waiting a while for because Frost was on my list of actors I need to see on the show.  The BBC have released the first official photo of Frost as his yet unnamed character, and I think this Christmas adventure might be taking place amongst the stars and on a spaceship.

Last up we have Nathan McMullen, a name that I will freely admit did not ring any bells with me.  McMullen is best known for his role of Finn in the E4 drama Misfits.  I have never watched Misfits so I really don’t know much about him, however Finn marked his big breakthrough role, so being cast in the must watch TV event of Christmas can be no bad thing.

The news just keeps coming, the Radio Times have announced that we Jenna Coleman will definitely be appearing as Clara Oswald in the Christmas Special, however it is still not clear as to whether this will be her final adventure with Peter Capaldi’s Doctor.  We have also learnt of two more casting announcements for this episode, Faye Marsay who can currently be seen in new British movie Pride will be joining the cast.  Marsay is also currently starring in the new E4 drama Glue and she is a wonderful new British talent, and can’t wait to see what role she will be playing.  Natalie Gumede, best known to British audiences for her villainous role of Kirsty in Coronation Street will also be making an appearance in the episode and it is lovely to see a nice balance of male and female characters.

I can’t wait to learn more about who these stars will be playing, and just what mayhem the Doctor can cause in the festive season.
