They’ve got a power and a force that you’ve never seen before,
They’ve got the ability to morph and to even up the score,
No one can ever take them down,
The power lies on their side…..

That’s right kids, and those who never quite stopped being kids, the meta-franchise Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is scheduled to hit our screens for a re-boot in 2016.

We’re going to have more stylised karat-e moves (and bad puns!) from Billy, Kimberly, Trini, Zack, Jason and Tommy (Blue, Pink, Yellow, Black, Red and Green respectively)

In the official press release Haim Saban, and Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer, the executives of both organizations, expressed excitement over the reboot of the 90’s well-loved television series.

“Lionsgate is the perfect home for elevating our Power Rangers brand to the next level,” said Saban. “They have the vision, marketing prowess and incredible track record in launching breakthrough hits from The Hunger Games to Twilight and Divergent.

The official Power Rangers movie synopsis mentioned a “modern reinvention” of the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (MMPR), where a group of high school students acquired extraterrestrial powers and must work together as a team to save the world (I’m going to bet you a dollar that they DO save the world!).

They know the fate of the world is lying in their hands,
They know to only use their weapons for defense,
No one will ever take them down,
The power lies on their side….

In the original 1995 release directed by Bryan Spicer, who has gone on to direct episodes of Prison Break, 24 and Castle, a giant egg is unearthed at a construction site and when opened, releases the terrible Ivan Ooze, who wreaks vengeance on Zordon for imprisoning him millennia ago. With Zordon dying and their powers lost, the Rangers head to a distant planet to find the mystic warrior Dulcea. Whether we revisit this story line, or adapt it or have something a bit more twenty-first century remains to be seen.

Director and cast selection is rumoured to be announced later in 2014. One can’t help but think they might have missed a fantastic marketing opportunity and gained more traction had they been able to release it for the 20th anniversary of MMPR.

For the Random Fact Lovers out there, there are in fact a whopping seventeen incarnations of Power Rangers “teams” –

1. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
2. Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers (this was basically a 10 episode team that appeared during the 3rd season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers)
3. Power Rangers Zeo
4. Power Rangers Turbo
5. Power Rangers In Space
6. Power Rangers Lost Galaxy
7. Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue
8. Power Rangers Time Force
9. Power Rangers Wild Force
10. Power Rangers Ninja Storm
11. Power Rangers Dino Thunder
12. Power Rangers S.P.D (Space Patrol Delta)
13. Power Rangers Mystic Force
14. Power Rangers Operation Overdrive
15. Power Rangers Jungle Fury
16. Power Rangers RPM
17. Power Rangers Samurai

……honestly having kids sometimes is REALLY helpful. It also explains why when I say “don’t you have a blue Power Ranger already?” I get an eye roll from Mr 9 like I am THE biggest idiot to ever walk the planet. I prefer the term selective in my useful knowledge!

Original Green Ranger/Tommy played by Jason David Frank was interviewed on IGN LIVE last month at San Diego Comic-Con 2014 and here he talks about the up-coming film.

We’ll keep you updated as soon as more information on cast and crew is announced!

Go, go Power Rangers, you Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers….. see you in cinemas on July 22, 2016.
