CAUTION: WandaVision Episode 4 Spoilers!

It was already known that Disney+’s WandaVision would form part of the set up for Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, but Episode 4 has also given us a look at some Captain Marvel characters. It gives us some food for thought about what we might expect from the upcoming Captain Marvel sequel, due out next year.

At the end of Ep 3, Wanda’s friend ‘Geraldine’ (Teyonah Parris) was apparently expelled from Wanda’s Sitcom World after mentioning Ultron. Of course, it was already revealed by Disney that Teyonah was actually playing the now grown up Captain Marvel character of Monica Rambeau – and that’s the SWORD logo on her pendant.

So Ep 4 starts with a big reveal – Monica was a victim of Thanos’ Snap, and she is shown rematerialising in the hospital room where she was at someone’s bedside when the Snap happened. It turns out it was her mom she was visiting. But there is no sign of her mom, Captain Marvel’s friend and co-pilot Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch).

Monica finds that, tragically, Maria succumbed three years earlier to her previously-beaten breast cancer, that had returned after Monica’s disappearance.

We learn that following the events of Captain Marvel, Maria had founded SWORD, the Sentient Weapon Observation and Response Division. Monica had become an agent of SWORD. The division is planned to play a large part in the MCU Phase Four, and possibly in WandaVision.

Given that Maria is dead, if she is in Captain Marvel 2 it would probably be in flashback. In MCU Timeline terms, the film is believed to be a sequel to Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame and a crossover/sequel to the WandaVision and Ms Marvel TV series (Ms Marvel due to air by the end of 2021).

The 31st Marvel Cinematic Universe film, and the 8th of Phase Four, Captain Marvel 2 is due for production to start spring 2021 with a release around November 11th 2022.
