Mank, The Crown, Schitt’s Creek Lead Golden Globe Nominations

It finally felt like awards season yesterday with the announcement of the Golden Globe nominations. Normally held in early January, like with most things, COVID has meant the ceremony is pushed back till the end of the month. And it’s going to be a very different Globes than we’re used to. Gone will be the stars of film and television co-mingling around boozy tables, resulting in an unpredictable, anything can happen vibe to the night. Instead our hosts will be separated by about 2800 miles with Tina Fey broadcasting from the Rainbow Room in NYC and Amy Poehler all the way across the country in the Globes’ usual digs, the Beverly Hilton.

While the look and feel of the show will feel different, the buzz around the announcement of the nominations is very much the same – cheers of joy for beloved stars and productions and cries of outrage at the ever-present snubs. Unsurprising, this year’s big winner is Netflix bagging 44 nominations across both film and TV categories. Topping the list of film nominations is Netflix’s Mank with 6 including best film, drama; best actor for Gary Oldman; best director for Fincher, and best supporting actress for Amanda Seyfried. The Trial of the Chicago 7 got 5 nominations with Nomadland, The Father and Promising Young Woman all with 4.

Over on the TV side, The Crown leads the nominations with 6 including Olivia Colman and Emma Corrin going head-for-head for best actress drama. The film season of Schitt’s Creek followed with 5, standing in good stead to do a repeat of last year’s Emmy’s.

The 78th Golden Globe Awards will be held on February 28 and can be viewed on NBC at 8pm ET/ 5pm PT.
