If you haven’t been watching The Crown on Netflix, why not?
In the new trailer, which you can watch below, we see the British Royal Family move from the 1970s into the 1980s. A tumultuous time for Britain.
With Olivia Colman and Tobias Menzies reprising their roles as HRH Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, another icon of the stage and screen also joins this season’s cast. Gillian Anderson is incredible as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, complete with bouffant hair and pinched voice.
Setting up the conflict between the Prime Minister and Her Majesty, we see how Thatcher comes across as not only unafraid of Elizabeth but ready to challenge her. In an exchange about their similarities Thatcher points out that they are, in fact the same age. And when asked who is the senior, she replies she is, which only points to more superb writing from the writing collective, headed by creator Peter Morgan.
With a Prime Minister at odds with her people and a war looming on the horizon in the Falklands, the Royal Family must also deal with safeguarding the line of succession. The plan is to secure an appropriate bride for Prince Charles, played by Josh O’Connor, who is still unmarried at 30. This, of course, will start the tragic love triangle of Prince Charles, Diana and Camilla. However, all the public see is a fairy-tale between a Prince and the beautiful shy Diana. The role of Diana is played by Emma Corrin.
While the public become enamored with Diana, behind closed doors the Royals continue to struggle like any other family. In a chilling reminder, the Queen Mother is certain the young girl will bend to the monarchy’s whims. The Queen asks, “And if she doesn’t, what then?”
“She’ll break,” Princess Margaret predicts.
