The Batman television series at HBO Max has lost its only writer.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter has exited the series, which is based off the universe in the upcoming Matt Reeves film. The reason cited is “creative differences” between Winter and the rest of the team, which also included Reeves. Currently, there’s a search underway for a new showrunner.

Reps for Warner Bros Television and HBO Max declined to comment about the exit from the series. A rep for Winter has not responded to request from several media outlets.

Now, the series is getting made as HBO Max has given it a commitment. This will be a prequel to The Batman, primarily taking place in the Gotham City Police Department. It will be an  “examination of the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City.”

The unnamed Batman spinoff is one of two series connected to DC Films in the works at HBO Max along with the John Cena-starring Peacemaker, which is spun off from The Suicide Squad.

The Batman is currently scheduled to hit theatres in March 2022.
