“Hello Baby-Sitters Club” – They’re Back For A Second Season

It looks like you will once again get to “say hello to your friends” in the Baby-Sitters Club with the news yesterday (October 28) that the Netflix reboot was being given a second season.

While the streaming service seems to renew and cancel series on a bit of an ad hoc basis, the reboot appears to have won over fans, new and old alike, when it premiered three months ago. The whole gang took to Twitter, sharing a cute vid of them singing along to the series’ theme song, only to announce they got a season 2 at the end.

Based on the global hit novels of the ‘80s and ‘90s, The Baby-Sitters Club follows the adventures of middle-schoolers Kristy Thomas (Sophie Grace), Claudia Kishi (Momona Tamada), Stacey (Shay Rudolph), Mary Anne Spier (Malia Baker) and Dawn Schafer (Xochitl Gomez) who decide to come together and form a babysitting service for the parents of their fictional Connecticut town, Stoneybrook.

Each episode of the first series took its plot from one of the original books told from one of the girl’s points-of-view (books 1-8, though they swapped the order of 6. Kristy’s Big Day and 7. Claudia and Mean Janine in the Netflix series). The final two episodes were based on the second Super Special – Baby-Sitter’s Summer Vacation, and saw later Baby-Sitter’s Club members Mallory (Vivian Watson) and Jessi (Anais Lee), welcomed to the Club.

While it is frightening at how young they all look to be paid to watch kids, the series has done a great job of modernising the franchise (do you really all need to meet in one room with a landline for a set period each week to book jobs? How retro!) and tackling some pretty major issues. Wealth inequality, physical and mental health, and identity were all explored in the first season, with similar topics likely to feature in the next season.

Season two currently does not have a release date, but you can relive all the fun from the first season of The Baby-Sitters Club now on Netflix.
