The award winning star of the hit musical Hamilton, Renee Elise Goldsberry, has been cast in the comedy Girls5Eva. The series explores the story of an all-female pop group from the ’90s. They are famous as one-hit wonders, but are brought back into the limelight by a sample from a rap song. Goldsberry is due to play Wickie, the lead singer, whose career has stalled but is determined to resurrect the group’s success.

Sara Bareilles will also play former Girls5eva member Dawn, stuck managing her family’s small Italian restaurant in the New York suburb of Queens. A twist of fate leads to Dawn reluctantly bringing Girls5Eva back together, giving her a renewed sense of purpose.

“They may be grown women balancing spouses, kids, jobs, debt, aging parents and shoulder pain, but can’t they also be Girls5Eva?” queries the logline.

Goldsberry described the project as “something brave and new,” and said “I’m grateful I get to be in the room with them. I honestly can’t think of a better way to transition out of this year and into the new one than laughing with strong and beautiful women.”

Goldsberry won a Tony Award and a Grammy for her role as Angelica Schuyler in Hamilton and played assistant state’s attorney Geneva Pine in The Good Wife. Her other TV credits include Evil, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, Documentary Now!, and Altered Carbon.

The series is the brainchild of Meredith Scardino of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt fame. She will also be an executive producer alongside Tina Fey, notable for 30 Rock and Mean Girls, and Robert Carlock.
