Netflix is trying a new tactic to connect with potential subscribers. The streaming site is offering certain Netflix-produced movies and the first episodes of select TV shows for free to anyone without a subscription.
The titles available to view for free are some of Netflix’s biggest hits too. Bird Box, starring Sandra Bullock, earned record-setting views when it was released. The Two Popes, starring Jonathan Pryce and Anthony Hopkins, earned both stars Oscar nominations earlier this year for their performances. The film Murder Mystery with Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston is also available for free.
On the TV side, catch the first episodes of the massive hit Stranger Things, Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda’s acclaimed sitcom Grace and Frankie, and Ava DuVernay’s award-winning mini-series When They See Us. The latter is a three-episode dramatic retelling of five young men, later known as the Central Park Five, who were wrongfully convicted of the rape and assault or attempted murder of a female jogger. Other titles available include Spanish-language high school thriller Elite, reality series Love is Blind, nature documentary Our Planet, and The Boss Baby: Back in Business, which is a spin-off of the animated movie.
Netflix is likely hoping you will be so interested in the first episodes of these shows that you will sign up to watch more. Whether that will help the streaming service reclaim more of the market that has started to drift over to other services, such as Disney+, remains to be seen.
