“Last night, I dreamt that I went to Manderley again…”
The trailer for director Ben Wheatley’s (High Rise) adaptation of the beloved Daphne Du Maurier novel Rebecca was released. There’s not much change from the 1930 novel and the 1941 Alfred Hitchcock directed Best Picture winner.
In Rebecca, we follow the second Mrs. de Winter (Lily James), a former lady’s companion who meets her wealthy and secretive husband (Armie Hammer) on a trip to Monte Carlo. Following a whirlwind romance in the sunnier climes, the shy woman returns home with her husband to the atmospheric estate, where she is dogged by the memory of his first wife, Rebecca, whose memory is slavishly kept alive by the housekeeper Mrs. Danvers (Kristin Scott Thomas).
On the intimidating task of directing Rebecca, Wheatley said to EW, “When I read the script, I realized that a lot of the things I thought I knew about Rebecca were wrong. I fell for all the twists and I thought I knew better than the script and I didn’t.”
Rebecca will be released on Netflix on Oct. 21.
