Producer Jon Landau has posted a couple of new photos from Avatar 2 on Instagram. The photos are of second unit filming, showing some of the human military characters in the long awaited sequel.

Landau shared the new photos late last week from the set in Wellington, New Zealand.

Meanwhile James Cameron recently confirmed during an interview with Arnold Schwarzenegger for Arnie’s YouTube channel, that the live-action filming for Avatar 2 is now complete.

As Avatar 2’s live action was almost entirely shot in New Zealand, filming was able to resume in late May following the country’s aggressive lockdown and safety measures to tackle the COVID-19 outbreak. Many productions have found themselves delayed much longer, not restarting till July or August, and filming for some is still affected, with safety protocols extending the whole production process.

Production on the as yet untitled Avatar sequel has been ongoing for a couple of years, long enough, in fact, for director James Cameron to be able to give the cast and crew a sneak preview of some of the (almost) finished product. In July Landau posted a photo on Instagram as everyone got together to view three almost completed scenes.

Landau has been posting film updates regularly on his Instagram feed, including images of some pretty impressive Avatar military tech. He has also made sure we’re all well up on our hand hygiene with a truly impressive selection of t-shirts bearing variations of the “Wash Your Hands” message.

Back in July, Disney had a thorough reshuffle of its release schedules, and Avatar 2 has found itself pushed back a year. It was due to debut in December 2021, but will now open in December 2022, with Avatar 3 due in 2024. While Avatar was seen as a five-movie franchise, as James Cameron said in a Vanity Fair interview in 2017, the question of whether there will ever be an Avatar 4 or Avatar 5 will depend on the reception for the long delayed Avatar 2 and Avatar 3.
