If, like me, podcasts have been helping you get through the pandemic (thank you My Dad Wrote A Porno, among others), then I have some good news for your ears. No there’s not Belinda Blinked 6 out yet (I did just double check) but we will soon have the dulcet tones of Star Wars’ John Boyega and The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story’s Darren Criss appearing in a new scripted podcast.

The 10-part narrative sci-fi thriller, There Be Monsters is being brought to us by iHeartRadio, FlynnPictureCo., Psychopia Pictures and Boyega’s UpperRoom Productions and will be available later this year on the iHeartPodcast Network, reports Deadline.

Described by series creator and director Dan Bush as “a psychological thriller that chronicles the rise of humankind 2.0, and the disruptions to society that come with it”, There Be Monsters revolves around John Locke (Boyega), a mysterious hero with a vendetta. Locke manages to infiltrate a Silicon Valley body hacking startup run by an enigmatic CEO Max Fuller (Criss – though I currently can’t help but picture DJ’s know-it-all second son from Fuller House), whose highly secretive creations promise to enhance human biology in incredible ways. Of course, every drug has a side effect.

Podcasts are one of the easiest ways to produce new content in these physically-distancing, lockdown world, however, it hasn’t been complete smooth sailing for the production. The production began development late last year, with the creative team set to jet around to London, Atlanta and LA to record the actors earlier this year. Unfortunately production had to halt with the onset of the pandemic, forcing the team to move to complete remote working for the project, with each cast member sent a “Studio in a Box”. Then, thanks to wonders of modern technology, the director, producers and actors were able to be virtually connected around the world to perform and record the podcast. Despite the numerous time zones, 20 actors and over 400 pages of material to record, the production wrapped in two weeks.

“Getting to explore this format of storytelling whilst also adjusting to new methods of recording with the cast members made it an exciting process,” said Boyega. “I’m thrilled it all came together and hope audiences are just as drawn in as I was to this sci-fi thriller series.”

In addition to Boyega and Criss, the podcast also features Marley Shelton (Rampage), Clark Gregg (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and Tony nominee Sahr Ngaujah (Fela!, Patti Cake$).
