Oscar Winning Short Hair Love To Get Sequel Series At HBO Max

Hair Love, the totally adorable short that won an Oscar, is getting more love from HBO Max. We’re thrilled by this news because this short is absolutely adorable and will make you cry.

Hair Love, which hails from writer and co-director Matthew A Cherry, was given a greenlight for a 2D animated sequel series from HBO Max. The short got viral attention through a kickstarter and word of mouth which made it blow up in a big way.

The 12-episode series will be called Young Love, which will focus on millennial parents Stephen and Angela, daughter Zuri, and their pet Rocky as “they juggle their careers, marriage, parenthood, social issues, and multi-generational dynamics all while striving to make a better life for themselves”.

In a statement, Cherry said, “I am beyond excited to continue telling the story of Stephen, Angela, and Zuri and further explore the family dynamics of a young Black millennial family we established in our short film Hair Love as an animated series.

Couldn’t ask for better partners in Sony Pictures Animation and HBO Max in helping us get Young Love out to the world.”

Cherry will serve as showrunner with Carl Jones (The Boondocks). While Issa Rae (Insecure) voiced the mother in Hair Love, it’s unknown if she’ll return for Young Love. Though it would be nice if she did.
