By now, fans of Netflix’s The Crown know that after two seasons the actors and actresses, who are portraying Britain’s Royal family are being recast, in order to keep the show as real as possible and instead of using a ton of make-up to age the cast.
While it took a long time after season two aired until it was announced who would replace Matt Smith, who played Prince Philip, and who would replace Claire Foy, who played Queen Elizabeth II, it did not take long until it was announced that Imelda Staunton would replace Olivia Colman as the Queen in the fifth and final season of the show.
Today (July 2) Netflix announced on the official social media pages of the show, who will be playing Princess Margaret and thus, who will take over from Helena Bonham Carter, who portrayed the Queen’s sister amazingly well: Lesley Manville.
The actress is well known for her recent part in the TV show Mum, as well as her portrayal in Phantom Thread, in which she can be seen alongside Daniel Day-Lewis and Vicky Krieps, and which earner her an Oscar nomination as Best Supporting Actress.
In a statement, Manville expressed her happiness to be cast in the show:
“I could not be happier to be playing Princess Margaret,” she said. “The baton is being passed on from two formidable actresses and I really don’t want to let the side down.”
Season five of The Crown will see Manville reunite with Staunton after both have played fairy godmothers in Maleficent. Something Manville is also looking forward to:
“Furthermore, to play siblings with my dear friend Imelda Staunton will be nothing short of a complete joy.”
I am sure it will be quite a joy to see both actresses take over from Colman and Bonham-Carter respectively and I am quite excited to see who else will join them in the final season.
Season four of The Crown will return later this year, after production wrapped early due to COVID-19, though a specific date has not been announced yet.
