Batwoman Casts Javicia Leslie In Title Role

The new Batwoman has been found, and we’re obsessed already.

As reported by EW last night (Wednesday, July 8), Javicia Leslie (God Friended Me) will play Ryan Wilder aka the new Batwoman in season two of the CW series. She will be the first black woman to don the cowl and the first black female actor to take a title role in the Arrowverse. Leslie took over from Ruby Rose, who exited the role of Kate Kane at the end of Batwoman season one.

On landing the part, Leslie said, “I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community.”

In an effort to avoid the trop of “Bury Your Gays”, showrunner Caroline Dries promised that Rose’s Kate Kane is not dead. She is, however, missing. And with Batwoman MIA, a new hero will have to take over the role, which leads us to Ryan Wilder, who will be played by Leslie.

Ryan is described as “likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. She’s also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the Batsuit before her. With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. Today Ryan lives in her van with her plant. A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat and could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical All-American hero.”

Ryan also does not have a comic analogue.

Batwoman will return Sundays at 8/7c on The CW.
