For Hamilton fans around the globe, the wait is almost over. While our theatre doors may still be closed, in just under a fortnight, the room where it happens will be lounge and bedrooms the world over as the stage show becomes available on Disney+.
Excitement has been building since it was announced earlier this year that a filmed version of the Tony-winning musical would be released in cinemas. That only increased when the release date was brought forward from 15 October 2021 to 3 July 2020 and not in local cinemas but on Disney+. The internet has once again lost it when the first official trailer for the movie dropped yesterday. And with good reason. Featuring the award-winning original Broadway cast, the movie was filmed at Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre in June 2016. Tickets for the OG cast were the hottest on Broadway with some fans queuing in the streets around the theatre for days in the hope of picking up a returned ticket. Not to mention the resale value of tickets had theatregoers often asked for more than $1000 for a seat.
For those of us unlucky folks who didn’t get to see the original Broadway cast, but have listened to the cast album ad nauseam, the upcoming movie release is just what is needed after months in shutdown and the trailer merely hints at what we can expect next Friday. If you haven’t watched it (and why the hell not?) or can’t resist watching it again whenever you see the link, enjoy.
Hamilton stars creator Lin-Manuel Miranda in the title role, with Leslie Odom Jr. as Aaron Burr, Renée Elise Goldsberry as Angelica Schuyler, Christopher Jackson as George Washington, Jonathan Groff as King George, Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton, Daveed Diggs as Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson, Jasmine Cephas Jones as Peggy Schuyler/Maria Reynolds, Okieriete Onaodowan as Hercules Mulligan/James Madison and Anthony Ramos as John Laurens/Philip Hamilton.
Hamilton drops on Disney+ July 3.
