If you’ve just finished your binge of Avatar: The Last Airbender or loved the Moon Kingdom in Sailor Moon, then Netflix’s upcoming animated film Over the Moon may just be what you need. Inspired by Chinese art and mythology, this Netflix and Pearl Studio production promises something very beautiful.
Over the Moon follows a smart young girl named Fei Fei (Cathy Ang) who has clung onto the stories of the Moon Goddess that her mother told her about before her death. Wanting to re-spark her father’s (John Cho) belief in the stories, Fei Fei uses her passion for science to build a rocket to take her and her pet rabbit to the moon so they can meet the Moon Goddess.
It works. She ends up on the world of the Moon full of fantastical creatures and a quest that Fei Fei has to undertake. And there’s a lot of amazing talent in the film, which features Phillipa Soo, Ken Jeong, John Cho, Margaret Cho, Kimiko Glenn, and Sandra Oh.
Over the Moon is directed by Academy Award-winner Glen Keane, who worked as a Disney animator for The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Beauty and the Beast. Fellow Oscar-winner John Kahrs (Paperman) also served as co-director for Over the Moon. The late screenwriter Audrey Wells (The Hate U Give) penned the script.
Over the Moon heads to Netflix this fall.
