Jackie director Pablo Larraín has a new film in the works. His new indie drama Spencer is about certain moments in the life of Lady Diana. As Collider reported, we now get to know more details about the film and its actors. The lead role will be played by Kristen Stewart.
The film, named for Diana’s surname, is set in the late 90s when Diana spends a long Christmas-weekend in the royal country house, Sandringham. This is when she decided that her marriage with Prince Charles wasn’t working. Speaking about the project, Larraín said that he wants to create a film that tells the story of how the royal icon that was so loved by the public, finds herself. The story will concentrate on Diana’s relationship to Charles as well as their separation, but also her relationship to her sons, William and Harry.
Pablo Larraín explains why he named the project Spencer after her family name. “Diana is such a powerful icon, where millions and millions of people, not just women, but many people around the world felt empathy toward her in her life. We decided to get into a story about identity, and around how a woman decides somehow, not to be the queen. She’s a woman who, in the journey of the movie, decides and realizes that she wants to be the woman she was before she met Charles. It’s about finding herself, about understanding that possibly the most important thing for her is to be well, and to be with herself and by herself.”
The director seems to be very happy with his choice of lead, praising Stewart and her abilities. “Kristen is one of the great actors around today. To do this well, you need something very important in film, which is mystery. Kristen can be many things, and she can be very mysterious and very fragile an ultimately very strong as well, which is what we need. The combination of those elements made me think of her,” He remarked. “The way she responded to the script and how she is approaching the character, it’s very beautiful to see. I think she’s going to do something stunning and intriguing at the same time. She is this force of nature, [and] she’s very committed.”
He added, “As a filmmaker, when you have someone who can hold such a weight, dramatic and narrative weight just with her eyes, then you have the strong lead who can deliver what we are looking for.”
The news about the project spread fast, with much online commentary on Stewart’s casting. Opinions appear mixed on the announcement, with some fans questioning if Stewart is the right person for the role to excitement about seeing what she can do with it. What do you think? Are you sceptical about this casting decision or do you believe that Stewart can deliver a good Diana?
In my opinion you always have to acknowledge the growth of experience as an actress as well as her personal growth. Even though a lot of people still connect her to Twilight, which introduced her to a worldwide audience, she developed further than that and it’s exciting to see that.
