Batwoman is still losing Kate Kane (Ruby Rose), but it won’t be to the “bury you gays” trope.
It’s been almost a month (has it been a month? Time has lost all meaning) since it was announced that Ruby Rose was stepping down as Batwoman after one season in the role. No side has really said anything about the reasons why it happened, but there have been theories.
When people heard that instead of recasting the role of Kate Kane, Batwoman would replace the character with a brand new one, many minds went to the dreaded “bury your gays” trope where a gay character is unceremoniously killed off.
In a statement released on Wednesday (June 10) morning, Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries addressed the concerned and promised that Kate will not be dead, just missing.
“As a lesbian who’s been working as a writer for the past fifteen years, I’m well aware of the “Bury Your Gays” trope and I have no interest in participating in it. That’s why it’s important to me as the showrunner to clarify any misinformation out there about Kate Kane and recasting Batwoman. Like you, I love Kate Kane – she’s the reason I wanted to do the show. We’ll never erase her. In fact, her disappearance will be one of the mysteries of season two. I don’t want to give away any of our surprises, but to all our devoted fans, please know that LGBTQ+ justice is at the very core of what Batwoman is and we have no intention of abandoning that.”

Fans, however, just want a recast for Kate Kane vs an entirely new character. The news of the creation of Ryan Wilder has been largely met…well it hasn’t been met well by many fans.
Batwoman returns for season two in Jan 2021 on Sundays at 8/7c on The CW.
