After years of protecting the world from the shadows, someone is looking to bring The Old Guard into the light. Netflix dropped the trailer for the upcoming film based on the Image Comic of the same name by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández. Fun fact: Rucka also adapted the screenplay!
The Old Guard follows a group of immortal mercenaries led by Charlize Theron’s Andy. Joined by their newest member (Kiki Layne), the team finds themselves exposed and having to fight to get out of the hands of those who would love to monetize their abilities.
Marwan Kenzari, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Chiwetel Ejiofor will also star in the film with Gina Pryce-Bythewood directing. Check out the synopsis below.
“Led by a warrior named Andy (Charlize Theron), a covert group of tight-knit mercenaries with a mysterious inability to die have fought to protect the mortal world for centuries. But when the team is recruited to take on an emergency mission and their extraordinary abilities are suddenly exposed, it’s up to Andy and Nile (Kiki Layne), the newest soldier to join their ranks, to help the group eliminate the threat of those who seek to replicate and monetize their power by any means necessary. Based on the acclaimed graphic novel by Greg Rucka and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (LOVE & BASKETBALL, BEYOND THE LIGHTS), THE OLD GUARD is a gritty, grounded, action-packed story that shows living forever is harder than it looks.”
Based on the trailer? It looks The Old Guard will be a lot of fun for action fans who like a bit of a supernatural edge to the proceedings. Plus Theron remains an absolute badass and Layne more then holds her own. Ejiofor looks to be great fun as the villain of the piece.
The Old Guard will hit Netflix on July 10.
