MGM has found someone willing to respect tradition (TRADITION!) for its film adaptation of the classic musical, Fiddler on the Roof.

According to Deadline, Tommy Kail will direct the film. Kail, for the theatre nerds here (or if you read the article title), was the one who directed Hamilton. Kail both oversaw the original production and the film capture of it, which will debut on Disney+ in July.

Kail said, “It has been a life-long dream of mine to direct Fiddler, though I always imagined I would do it on stage. I am over-joyed to have the opportunity to make a new film version of my favorite show with Mike DeLuca at MGM, where so many transcendent musical movies have been made. I’m proud to partner with Dan Jinks, Aaron Harnick and my great pal, Steven Levenson, to honor a work that has profoundly inspired me and millions of others.”

Dear Evan Hansen‘s book writer and Fosse/Verdon showrunner Steven Levenson teams with Kail again. He will write the script for the film adaptation.

Levenson said, “Fiddler On The Roof was the first piece of theater I saw, at the age of 5. Today, more than 50 years after it changed the face of Broadway forever, the story of Tevye and his beloved village of Anatevka feels more timely than ever.”

Fiddler on the Roof was originally put to film in 1971 about seven years afters its Broadway debut in 1964. It’s a musical classic performed on amateur and professional stages alike over the world. Most recently, it had a buzzy (and great) 2015 revival on Broadway.

Set in Imperial Russia in the early 1900s, Fiddler on the Roof follows Tevye, a father of five daughters, who struggles to maintain his Jewish cultural and religious traditions while outside influences trickle in. His daughters wish to marry for love rather than arranged matches, which will take them outside of those traditions. Then there’s an edict evicting the Jews from their village.

Fiddler on the Roof does not currently have a release date.
