Out of the many classic sitcoms of the 80s and 90s, The Nanny remains pretty universally beloved by all who remember it. Why? Well the fashion, the fun, the characters, and the long slow burn romance between Nanny Fran Fine (Fran Drescher) and Broadway producer Maxwell Sheffield (Charles Shaughnessy).
Like, seriously, that chemistry was the definition of fire and would often make my heart get all fluttery.
Fans have been waiting for years for The Nanny to find a second life on a streaming platform. While that hasn’t come to pass, Fran Drescher has had plans in the works, such as a Broadway musical of the property and her latest venture..a virtual table read.
According to Variety, The Nanny cast will reunite for a virtual table read of the pilot that will be acted out via Zoom. It will then be posted onto the Sony Pictures YouTube page for fans to enjoy.
Yaaaaaaaasssss.
In a statement from Drescher, she said the idea came together so that there can be laughter in the trying times of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Laughter is the best medicine! So, in these challenging times, Petah and I thought, wouldn’t it be great if we pulled together the original cast of ‘The Nanny’ for a virtual read of the pilot? t’s a once in a lifetime Pandemic Performance for our fans around the world who are currently stressing in isolation and could use a real upper! It sure has given each of us a lift and we hope it does for you as well.”
Charles Shaughnessy, Daniel Davis, Lauren Lane, Nicholle Tom, Benjamin Salisbury, Madeline Zima, Renee Taylor, Alex Sternin, Ann Hampton Callaway, DeeDee Rescher, Rachel Chagall and Jonathan Penner will all reprise their roles in the table read.
Who knows? If things go well maybe someone will finally snatch the streaming right for the series. We can only hope.
