Finally! Some good LGBTQ+ representation in superhero films, folks!
After waiting for years for the release of The New Mutants, director Josh Boone and the cast of the project have some major news about the storyline. While fans know that it’s a more horror take on the X-Men franchise, The New Mutants will also beat The Eternals to the punch and have a same sex love story in its film.
According to EW, this is not a two-second cameo or anything. It’s between two of the main characters: Maisie Williams’ Rahne Sinclair and Blu Hunt’s Danielle Moonstar. Talking of the love story, “It’s sort of the spine and focus of some of the character-driven stuff in the film.”
Williams was excited to portray the relationship on screen, saying it makes perfect sense from the comics. “Rahne and Dani have a telepathic connection in the comics, and so we just wanted to extend that in the film and put that within reality. If they really could understand each other on that level, then you’d probably end up falling in love with that person.”
The relationship, however, while important to the film is not the main focus of it.
Williams said, “It’s not really a story about these two characters understanding their sexuality. It’s not centered around that and they don’t really necessarily label it. No one else does either and no one really questions it.”
It’s not that big of a leap to make. The X-Men comic property has long been latched onto by the LGBTQ+ community, so it makes sense that this sort of representation would appear first in one of the films. We’ll have to see how much screentime the relationship will get, but it sounds like more than has been previously given in other properties like it.
The New Mutants will be released on April 3.
