Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is about to get another adaptation. This time from Taika Waititi.
Let’s just say with feeling Oh hell yeah.
The classic story by Roald Dahl will get two animated series over at Netflix from Waititi who will write, direct, and executive produce both of them. While one will be a more traditional adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the second series will, according to EW, focus “on the Oompa-Loompas, that builds out their world.”
No word on if Waititi will play Willy Wonka, but, dear God, we really want him to.
Granted with all the projects on Waititi’s plate, we wouldn’t be surprised if he takes a smaller role in the series. Waititi, fresh off his Oscar win for Best Adapted Screenplay, has Thor: Love & Thunder and football (soccer for the US) film, Next Goal Wins in the works as well.
Waititi’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory series is part of a deal that Netflix has to adapt many of Dahl’s works into “new animated series”. Other projects include Matilda and The BFG.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has had many adaptations over the years. The most beloved, however, remains the 1971 Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, which starred Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka. Tim Burton tried his hand with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory back in 2005. Recently, there’s been a musical version made as well.
Currently, there’s no release date to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for Netflix.
