Jungle Cruise looks to hopefully do to the Disney park ride what Pirates of the Caribbean did back in 2003: revitalize a genre (straight pulpy adventure stories) while telling a wholly original tale. While it remains to be seen whether or not this will work in the long-run, we can say that Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt definitely play off each other well in the new trailer.
Also we like what we’re presuming is the theme music for the film that plays throughout the trailer.
In Jungle Cruise, Blunt plays a scientist named Lily, who heads to the Amazon to find a tree with mystical healing properties, while Johnson plays the jaded riverboat captain, who spent years of his life looking for the tree. The two team-up on an adventure as they attempt to outrun the undead and the villain (Jesse Plemons) that wants to use the tree’s powers for evil.
Along the way, the pair deal with magic and mundane threats, such as the said undead and a submarine helmed by the bad guys. All while bickering along the way.
Definitely The Mummy meets Pirates (back when it was good) sort of vibes with the trailer, which we are not hating here.
Jungle Cruise is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (The Shallows) from a script co-written by Michael Green (Logan) and screenwriting duo Jon Requa and Glenn Ficarra (Bad Santa).
Jungle Cruise is set to be released on July 24.
