Parasite Makes History At 92nd Academy Awards

This year’s award season has been pretty consistent. At award show after award show, the same names and films have been dominating the main categories. That is not to say they haven’t necessarily earned the praise and accolades, but – to be honest – it was getting pretty boring and predictable. So with the 92nd Academy Awards in Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre last night (February 9), many assumed they would deliver more of the same. While on the whole that was true, it also delivered some shock historic wins and that is why the Oscars is the ultimate award show.

The four acting awards were basically sown up before the curtain even lifted, with Joaquin Phoenix, Renée Zellweger, Laura Dern and Brad Pitt continuing their award winning sweep. Joker – the leading Oscar nominated film with 11 nominations – was able to convert that into two wins, including Phoenix’s Best Actor. Of the three films with 10 nominations, 1917 walked away with three awards, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood took two, while The Irishman went home empty handed.

However, the night truly belonged to South Korea’s Parasite. The black comedy, class-warfare thriller took home four Oscars, among these were Best Original Screenplay and Best International Feature (formerly Best Foreign Film) – the first time a South Korean movie has won the statute. But it was Bong Joon Ho’s win for Best Director that indicated there could be a few surprises ahead in the show. And it did that winning Best Picture, being the first foreign language film to take out the category.
