Dev Patel seems to be carving a niche for himself by playing figures from classic literature. At least between The Personal History of David Copperfield and The Green Knight anyway. (Not that we’re complaining. Get the man in an Austen adaptation or something next.)
For those of you who either a) weren’t nerds for Arthurian lore or b) majored in English Lit in college, The Green Knight is a film version of the poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. In it, the titular knight of the Round Table and nephew of King Arthur accepts a challenge from the mysterious Green Knight. Gawain gets a hit at the Green Knight, but the Knight will return in a year and a day and return the blow.
So Gawain has to keep his word, especially when he cuts the guy’s head off and he picks it up to remind Gawain of the challenge. Now, The Green Knight trailer looks a lot darker and moodier than the myth would have you think.
The trailer is honestly gorgeous to watch with a lot of atmosphere and pretty frames. It looks epic, especially when Gawain (Patel) meets the Green Knight (Ralph Ineson).
The film was directed and written by David Lowery (Pete’s Dragon, The Old Man and the Gun).
The Green Knight will be released May 29, 2020.
