Riverdale To Tackle Hedwig And The Angry Inch For Season 4 Musical Episode

Musicals never go well in Riverdale. From Midge (Emilija Baranac) dying in the middle of Carrie: The Musical to see the sinister Farm and debuting Edgar Evernever (Chad Michael Murray) at the end of a production of Heathers, Riverdale High just doesn’t have the best track record.

You can’t keep a good director down though. While Kevin Keller (Casey Cott) has decided to turn the musical into a variety show, Mr. Honey (Kerr Smith) puts a kibosh on him performing Hedwig.

“After the previous debacles of Carrie and Heathers, Kevin Keller has decided to revive Riverdale High’s tradition of hosting a Variety Show! But when Mr. Honey forbids him from performing a number from Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Kevin and our gang rallies against their principal — by each performing a number from Hedwig, turning the Variety Show into a full-fledged musical that, as always, reflects our characters’ inner lives and struggles. And amidst all the drama, one forbidden “showmance” begins to blossom…”

The sign-up sheet sees all the kids of the school who signed up change their entry to Hedwig. It makes sense as, well, Hedwig and the Angry Inch is largely a one person show (there are others characters, but well…it’s Hedwig’s show). Except for Ms. Burble (Gina Torres), who apparently just wants to sing Dolly Parton classic, “9 to 5”.

Please, let that happen. Just all these kids singing Hedwig in protest and let Gina Torres belt out “9 to 5” in the middle of it.

According to series creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the musical episode is now a full on Riverdale tradition.

“When we heard that Stephen Trask was a fan of Riverdale, we thought—is there a way we can do Hedwig and still have it tie into the stories we’re telling? Doing a deep dive, we figured out a cool way to use classic songs like ‘Wicked Little Town’ and ‘Midnight Radio’ that made total sense and are just amazing and iconic. And bonus, Hedwig is literally Cole’s favorite musical!”

Well who knows? Maybe Cole Sprouse will sing again this year.

Riverdale airs Wednesdays at 8/7c on the CW. Riverdale‘s musical episode will air on April 8th.
