Jared Leto playing some kind of vampire is honestly the least surprising casting choice in the history of casting choices. (Though given his behavior on the set of Suicide Squad, we have to wonder if Leto did something similar to get in character for Morbius. Seriously, if he drank blood, we will not be surprised.)
The trailer for the film, which is an attempt by Sony to hang onto those Spider-Man characters for as long as they can, follows Michael Morbius (Jared Leto). He’s a brilliant scientist with a rare blood disorder who is attempting to cure himself. As one is wont to do in genre fiction, he experiments on himself to get that cure.
But at what cost? Well, he gets abs and turns into a vampire. Now things are spiraling out of control for Morbius, who is reimagined as more of antihero over the Spidey villain he is in the comics.
Actually, unlike Tom Hardy’s Venom, we see some nods to Spidey. There’s a poster of him with the word MURDERER spray-painted on it (a nod to the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home?) and there’s a surprise Michael Keaton, though if he’s reprising Adrian Toomes from Spider-Man: Homecoming or playing a new character hasn’t been revealed.
Morbius also stars Matt Smith (Doctor Who), Adria Arjona (Good Omens), Jared Harris (Chernobyl), Al Madrigal (I’m Dying Up Here), and Tyrese Gibson (Fast and Furious franchise).
Morbius will be released on July 31, 2020.
