Fairy tales are, unsurprisingly, kind of majorly messed up.
We’re not talking about the Disney-ified version of the fairy tales. No we’re talking of the ones where Snow White was actually dead, Little Red Riding Hood was eaten by the Big Bad Wolf, and, of course, Hansel and Gretel.
Hansel and Gretel: the story about two kids going into the woods with no supervision and find a candy house. The one where there’s a witch and she tries to fatten up the kids to eat them later? No wonder someone wanted to make a horror movie out of that.
The trailer for Gretel & Hansel, a reimagining of the classic German fairy tale by Oz Perkins (I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives In The House), released its trailer today. It sure is disturbing.
For one, Gretel (Sophia Lillis) is older than her brother, Hansel (Sammy Leakey). The pair were cast out from home for unknown reasons and Gretel tries to keep her younger brother safe while looking for food and work. They eventually find the home of a strange old woman (Alice Krige), who seems to sense a power in Gretel.
“This is your power to see what is hidden and to take it.”
Either way, we’re all super uncomfortable and can’t wait to see our fairy tales go dark as can be.
Gretel & Hansel will be released on Jan. 31.
