Some people have the worst luck.
In the trailer for the upcoming rom com with a twist, The Lovebirds, we see a couple Jibran (Kumail Nanjiani) and Leilani (Issa Rae) on the verge of a break-up taking a trip to New Orleans. With the future of their relationship not looking good, some random guy runs into their car, then another random guy (claiming to be a cop) shows up, commandeers their car, uses it to kill the first guy, and then leaves the couple to take the blame for the murder.
Now Julie and Eric have to clear their names, which leads to some hilarious events along the way, such as getting ridiculous disguises, attend an immersive play, commit an actual crime, and get held captive by one terrifying couple (Anna Camp and Kyle Bornheimer). On top of that, the couple (and possibly their relationship) need to survive.
Talking with Entertainment Weekly, Rae and Nanjiani joined the film early enough to interject some of their own personal demographics into the script.
As Rae said, “Initially they were written for white people which, plot-wise, would have been a different story. It’s not a story about race but we wanted to acknowledge our race and the fact that we’re an interracial couple.”
The Lovebirds will be released on April 3.
