Episode four of the Star Wars series The Mandalorian saw Bryce Dallas Howard, the daughter of legendary Happy Days star Ron Howard, step up to the role of director. The main plot of the episode focuses on when the Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) and the Child (a tiny infant Yoda) escape to a remote woodland planet, only to fall foul of mercenaries and raiders. The stand-out moments in the show come from the heartwarming antics of the infant Jedi master.
In an adorable echo of the first meal he and Luke share together in The Empire Strikes Back, the image of him sipping soup already seems to have broken the internet with a flurry of memes – which Bryce Dallas Howard describing Yoda as “the light of all our lives.”
The director went on to talk to Variety about how the team working on the episode wanted to use a Baby Yoda puppet as much as possible rather than rely too heavily on CGI. The creative team wanted to “shoot from Baby’s perspective” and “see the world through its eyes.” Despite having caused internet users to melt into a puddle of hormones, the scene was filmed straight after a fight scene between Gina the mercenary and Mandalorian’s stunt double.
Howard also claimed she drew on her experience working with mechanical dinosaurs in the Jurassic Park franchise when it came to creating the All-Terrain Heavy-Scout (AT-ST), the lightweight bipedal walker used by the ground forces of the Galactic Empire.
The opportunity to direct an episode of The Mandalorian had clearly meant a great deal to Howard. When asked if she would be willing to return for the second season of the series, she said she would love to work with the show’s team again “in any and every capacity in the future.”
The Mandalorian releases new episodes every Friday on Disney+.
