The latest installment to the Star Wars franchise, titled The Rise of Skywalker, is set to explore more of both Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Finn’s (John Boyega) backstories. Although they have been fixtures of the Star Wars films that have been released since 2015, little has been revealed to viewers about their trajectories.
Beyond Finn having been a stormtrooper who renounced his allegiance to the Empire to fight for the resistance, his back story has remained a mystery. This has also been the case with Rey, the scavenger-turned-fighter whose humble existence is changed radically by learning more and more about her past, as well as her attempts to harness her abilities with the Force.
Director JJ Abrams recently revealed that The Rise of Skywalker, due to hit cinemas just before Christmas, will include more details. Although he maintained that viewers won’t be subject to “exhaustive downloads on all of their childhoods and every major step that got them to where they are” he confirmed that each of the characters gets “more light” shed on their stories.
Overall, The Rise of Skywalker is meant to be about closure, given that it will bring to an end to this particular chapter, that of eight trilogy films spanning five decades, in the Star Wars saga.
For Abrams, this was apparently at the forefront of his thoughts when the film went into production.
“You have to get some answers. You have to learn some things,” he explained to Vanity Fair. “It makes beginnings tantalizing and exciting because hopefully the audience will feel the same feeling you have, which is, ‘Ooh, I think I know where this is going. Let’s see how we get there.’ “
