When Game of Thrones veteran Natalie Dormer was revealed to be joining the new Penny Dreadful: City of Angels cast, we just knew this show was going to be one to watch. After the news that was shared this week about the upcoming sequel, it is safe to say Dormer was made for this show.
Showtime released on Wednesday a first look for Dormer’s character, a demon named Magda. According to Dormer, at its core, City of Angels (premiering on Showtime in 2020) is about the “demonization of the other.” For showrunner John Logan, he shared that Dormer’s Magda is what “makes it a Penny Dreadful.”
Dormer also shared some details about her character. The actress revealed that her shape-lifting hell queen as a “delicious, multidimensional thrill,” an “agent of chaos” who can “sow the seeds of disorder.” In the first season, we’ll meet three of Magda’s manifestations as humans, says the actress. “The audience will discover who those identities are as they continue to watch the show.”
As far as what her endgame is, according to Dormer, “she’s fundamentally a skeptic of humanity. She says in the first episode, ‘I give human beings a choice, but they choose time and time again to be seduced by the more baser, selfish roles.’”

As far as what is known about the upcoming horror-drama series, City of Angels will be set in 1938 Los Angeles, “a time and place deeply infused with social and political tension.” When a grisly murder shocks the city, Det. Vega becomes embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles. The series will be “deeply infused with Mexican-American folklore and social tension” and feature an “exciting mix of the supernatural and the combustible reality of the period, creating new occult myths and moral dilemmas within a genuine historical backdrop.”
