With the end of Game of Thrones, there is a void in the prestige fantasy drama realm left by the popular HBO series. It looks like that the answer will be Netflix’s The Witcher.
Based on the novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, which were turned into a popular video game franchise, The Witcher follows Geralt of Rivia, a lone monster hunter who struggles to find his place in a world where people are worse than the monsters he hunts. With war brewing, Geralt finds himself on a collision course with Destiny as he meets sorceress Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) and Princess Ciri (Freya Allan).
The final trailer for The Witcher, which Netflix is pushing hard, was released today. We see some bloody violence, political intrigue, sword fights, and magic. It looks as moody and atmospheric as fans of The Witcher and shows like it would have hoped.
The Witcher has scored an early season two renewal. In addition, first reactions for the series have been positive online. So it looks like The Witcher may be staying around for awhile. If it’s as big of a success as Netflix is clearly banking on, then it will provide competition against Disney and Amazon.
Check out the trailer above.
The Witcher will debut on Friday, Dec. 20 on Netflix.
