It looks like The CW is turning its gaze to the next generation of heroes for its Arrowverse. One of the two series in the development is Green Arrows and the Canaries, which follows Mia Smoak (Katherine McNamara) and the next generation of heroes in the future.
With the newest casting call for Superman & Lois, the other Arrowverse series in development at The CW, it looks like there will be some younger characters involved with the series. It does raise questions about the direction for the show. Previous news described it “revolves around the world’s most famous Super Hero and comic books’ most famous journalist as they deal with all the stress, pressures and complexities that come with being working parents in today’s society.”
Why are we confused? Because based on the released character breakdowns, it appears that they may be Jonathan Kent and Damian Wayne. This is an open casting call. Tulloch shared the breakdowns on her Twitter.
“Matthew is a 14-year-old caucasian boy, with an eye toward casting someone between 13 and 16. He is described as “well on his way to becoming a physical specimen. Clean cut, modest and kind-hearted, with an aw-chucks attitude that somehow doesn’t seem dated. A three-sport athlete who’s already garnering attention from college and pro scouts.
Ethan, meanwhile — also a 14-year-old caucasian who they would like to be played by someone between 13 and 16 — is described as “a young Leonardo DiCaprio who has an inherent darkness to him. Ethan’s wildly intelligent, but his mercurial temperament and social anxiety limits his interactions with people, and consequently, he spends most of his free time playing video games.”
Based on what we know from Jonathan and Damian in comics, it sounds like “Matthew” will be Jon and “Ethan” will be Damian. We do have some concerns about the breakdown for “Ethan” if it is Damian Wayne. In the comics, Damian is the son of Bruce Wayne and Talia al-Ghul is half-white. So this could be a case of whitewashing if that is the route they’re going down.
If it is Jonathan and Damian, then how does it fit into the series? Will this take place further in the future than we’re expecting? Or will the show use flash-forwards like Arrow did in season seven (and part of season eight)? Or will their baby just grow super fast? That’s a possibility. Jonathan in comics went from like 13 to 17 like that.
Basically, we have no clue. Hopefully, we’ll get more details once filming for the pilot goes underway in Spring 2020.
Until then, we can see Hoechlin and Tulloch on Crisis on Infinite Earths, which begins on Sunday, Dec. 8 at 8/7c on the CW.
