Looks like Miles Morales and his team of fellow Spider-esque heroes will be slinging their way back to the Big Screen sooner than you think.
It was revealed this past weekend that Sony has set the release date for the Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse sequel, much to the delight of Marvel fans everywhere. The upcoming sequel, according to Sony, will be released in cinemas on April 8, 2022.
The Spider-Verse sequel, at this time, is the first of Spider-Man features from Sony with an official release date. As many fans know, Spider-Man and its many projects continue to be one of Sony’s biggest and most prized possessions. In addition to the Spider-Verse sequel, the studio also has a Venom sequel on its slate, with Tom Hardy returning as the anti-hero, along with the Spider-Man spinoff, Jared Leto’s Morbius, joining the ranks. Sony is also looking to develop a female-centric spinoff for the Spider-Man series (here’s hoping we get Spider-Gwen).
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse was a critically acclaimed hit, winning the hearts of critics and fans alike upon its release. The film, which took home the Oscar earlier this year for Best Animated Feature, follows the story of Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore), a teenager who takes up the mantel of Spider-Man after the death of Peter Parker. He gets help with adjusting to his new powers and role from a group of Spider-powered heroes (including a middle-aged Peter Parker from another dimension) who team up to stop the Kingpin (played by Liev Schreiber).
Given how incredible the original film is, it is almost hard to imagine where they will be taking us for this next outing, though the end credit scene of the first film may give us a lot to think about as far as where this journey will take us.
