The cast for the live-action version of The Little Mermaid was officially completed with the addition of Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hauer-King is the last main cast member to join the adaptation of the 1989 film. The role of Prince Eric took an unexpectedly long time to cast with Harry Styles and Krypton‘s Cameron Cuffe both up for the role at different points.
Hauer-King would not be well-known to a wide audience. Much like his co-lead Halle Bailey (Ariel), he is a relative newcomer to a wider audience. Hauer-King’s best-known roles were for his role in BBCOne’s miniseries Little Women as Laurie Laurence and his current role in WWII drama World on Fire.
In addition to Hauer-King and Bailey, the rest of the cast of the live-action adaptation has some pretty famous faces and voices. Melissa McCartney (Bridesmaids) will play Ursula. Javier Bardem (There Will Be Blood) will play King Triton. Jacob Tremblay (Good Boys), Awkwafina (The Farewell), and Daveed Diggs (Hamilton) will provide the voices of Flounder, Scuttle, and Sebastian respectively.
Rob Marshall (Into the Woods) will direct the film which will feature the classic songs by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken. Menken is also teaming with Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton) to pen new music for the film.
Production will begin for the film in 2020, but there is no set release date.
