Jamie Foxx Contemplates Purpose And Creativity In Pixar’s Soul Trailer

Credit: Pixar

Pixar is getting back into some more original content with their next two films, Onward and Soul. While we know that Onward is a sprawling suburban fantasy, Soul has left us with some major questions. Mainly what is about? With Soul‘s first trailer, some of our questions get answered.

It honestly seems like one of those existential Pixar films? We’re getting some Inside Out vibes. In Soul, director Pete Docter wrestles with the greatest questions like why are we here and what makes us…us.

We have some of our questions answered today with the first teaser. In it, Jamie Foxx’s character Joe Garden, a middle school teacher who moonlights as jazz musician, gets the gig of a lifetime. It could start his career in a meaningful way and put his passions to the forefront.

Then he falls down a sewer grate.

Joe ends up in the You Seminar, which is a celestial workshop that creates souls and gives them personalities before sending them off to human bodies. Determined to get back to his own body, Joe enlists the help of 22 (Tina Fey), who is a soul that can’t stand humans. She also wants to get her whole cowboy dance thing popular.

Also in the cast is Daveed Diggs (Hamilton), Phylicia Rashad (The Cosby Show), and Questlove.

Soul will be released on June 19, 2020.
