There are a lot of series featuring people playing Dungeons & Dragons together. Though I will challenge you to find one more successful than Critical Role.
Their insanely successful Kickstarter for an animated series based on their first campaign, The Legend of Vox Machina, smashed records. Seriously, it made $11.3 million. It’s the most quickly funded project and most funded Kickstarter for TV/film. Like damn, Critters.
While that $11.3 million funded a 10-episode series, which animates a time before the show began to stream for the group and the fan-favorite Briarwood arc, we’re getting more of the series.
According to Variety, The Legend of Vox Machina has been picked up by Amazon Prime for two seasons at 24 episodes. We’re getting more of animated Critical Role, folks. In addition to this, Amazon has inked a first look deal with the group, who went solo earlier in 2019, to develop a new series. (Previously, the show was part of Geek & Sundry.)
New series, you say? Perhaps an animated version of The Mighty Nein or maybe an UnDeadwood animated series? The possibilities are endless.
The group does promise that all rewards for backers will be met, including the first look at the series. They’re working out a way for people to see the series early on Amazon. An animated intro was released as part of the Kickstarter, which you can check out below.
Premiering in 2015 on the Amazon-owned Twitch, we join a “bunch of nerdy ass voice actors” as they play their long-running D&D game. Matthew Mercer (Overwatch) works as the Dungeon Master for the group known as Vox Machina which includes Travis Willingham (Fullmetal Alchemist), Laura Bailey (Fruits Basket), Liam O’Brien (Naruto), Marisha Ray (Persona Q), Sam Riegel (Ace Attorney), Taliesin Jaffe (Hellsing), and Ashley Johnson (Blindspot). The cast will all reprise their roles for the animated series.
The ragtag found family known as Vox Machina drink, fight, and adventure across the continent of Tal’Dorei. Eventually, they save the world along the way. Each of them end up having to confront past mistakes and baggage, generally becoming better people as well. Character development!
Riegel and Willingham, who acts as CEO for Critical Role studio, released a joint statement.
“We were absolutely floored by the level of enthusiasm we received on the Kickstarter campaign, and now we can deliver exactly what the fans wanted, and more. Teaming with Prime Video to deliver the series to fans across the globe is exciting and surreal — and we’re psyched to be able to tell even more stories with not just one, but two 12-episode seasons!”
The Legend of Vox Machina will air sometime in late 2020. Critical Role airs on Thursday at 7pm PST on Twitch. (Is it Thursday yet?_
